Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter in late October 2022, the state of social network has undergone rapid changes. Before, you only had to know about Twitter. Now there is Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and more. People are talking about the ‘fediverse’, but what is that exactly? And that is nothing to say of the talk about internet protocols, or the Dutch government that is talking about their Digital Commons.
The internet is moving rapidly not towards a singular replacement of Twitter, but instead towards a plurality of networks, often some form of microblogging. These new networks are differentiated as much along cultural lines as on technical aspects. Sometimes, these networks interoperate with each other to form a larger network, and sometimes people actively avoid contact with people on other networks.
As the writer of the Fediverse Report, I have build an extensive knowledge base of what is happening in the world of decentralised social networks. I can explain not only which changes are happening, but also the structural factors that are part of it. I understand the different cultures that are happening on the fediverse, on Bluesky, and how they are shaping the network.
As an organisation, the question of which internet platforms to have an account on, has gotten more complicated. The time of having a single account on every type of platform, and where that is viewed as the neutral, expected course of action, is over. Because social networks are getting linked with culture and identity, it becomes more important than ever for organisations to understand what is going on, and how to maintain an online presence.
