Bluesky has 3 million accounts, invites going away soon

Some news from Bluesky: yesterday the network reached the milestone of 3 million accounts. This milestone comes 2 months after hitting the 2 million mark. While there are no official numbers for Monthly Active Users (MAU), Kuba Suder estimates around 500k MAU, based on the daily and weekly active users. For comparision, Mastodon has between 1 million and 1.5 million MAU, depending on the source.

Bluesky’s growth is far from over, as Bluesky said that that ‘Invite codes are going away soon’. This is different from opening up the network for federation, which is also planned for early 2024.

Bluesky is explicitly positioning itself as a place that is welcoming and suitable for news organisations. Bluesky team member Emily published an explainer how newsrooms can use Bluesky for the upcoming election season. Not everyone is convinced the network is ready yet though, as ændra explains some features that the network needs to be fit for purpose.

    1. not that I know of. bluesky stats are pretty hard to come by since vqv.app went offline. Kuba’s daily/weekly AUs are the best there is afaik, and those arent even visible publicly, he just shares them sometimes

  1. @laurenshof Great, so all our major news outlets will just once again be sucked into a giant corporate machine, just like Twitter. I'm not exactly optimistic. 😅

  2. @laurenshof Bluesky is still pushing the notion that they'll federate, with something or someone, at some point, that uses their unique protocol that doesn't interoperate with anyone else?

  3. @laurenshof @jeffjarvis @leo i still don’t understand how people platform Bsky . The creator is a right leaning libertarian whose ideas align more with Musk , he still trusts musks and still believes in conspiracies . I think that’s inherently more dangerous than Zuckerbot whose social awkwardness fits aligns with decisions he makes which are a lot less evil that what musk or Jack thinks.
